由张奇开、蔡青、单增发起的“红军长征欧洲”行为活动于2002年6月在德国实施，行动之前，在柏林开了讨论会，列席的有文艺批评家冷林，张明月博士，与几位德国朋友。以下是当时的对话。

艺术家的对话

冷林：我们可以先对大家谈谈此次行动的目地何在？

张奇开：我们想通过此次的活动重新唤起人们的记忆，将长征精神发扬光大。

蔡青：用一个人们熟悉的符号，在特殊时代的陌生环境中产生的反差效果来激活人们的思维， 也是长征的延续与新的注释。

张明月：为什么是“长征”？中国有很多为世人熟悉的“符号”，比如兵马俑？

蔡青：兵马俑是静止的、固封的；而长征是流动的、开放的，符合当前的语境与状况，更重要的是它的精神内涵。

单增：红军穿越欧洲,红星照耀欧洲。西方对中国共产党的了解是通过爱德加·斯诺的１９３８年出版的《红星照耀中国》。在这本书里斯诺以其亲身的经历向西方阐述了共产主义理念在东方的实践。在这个意义上我们重返马克思的故乡做此作品有其特殊的意味。

焦平：我们可以由此体验从没有过的体验,完成一次从没想过能做的事.

Torsten Kastner: 你们此次活动有多少人加入？

单增：从柏林出发的有４人，由中国大陆和台湾艺术家组成，在卡塞尔汇合一位哥伦比亚人爱德加（ＥｄｇａｒＰｌａｔａ），一位苏丹人ＳａｌａｈＢａｋｈｅｉｔ，一位古巴人和一个德国人Ｔｕｂｒａｓ。

张奇开：我们沿途欢迎自愿者加入，不分国籍不分职业。体验“星星之火，可以燎原”。

蔡青：也许我们有限的服装（共有１２套服装和草鞋），在行进的过程中不够分配，那我们只好分出自身的所有，比如一个帽子给一个自愿者就示意入队了，再下去就是上装，这样到最终标志消失在人流中，也许这样成全了一种意念：消解，融合。

Wolfgang Knapp: 在欧洲做这么一个“长征”是出于什么动机，是好玩还是传达什么意念？

冷林：２０世纪３０年代为创建新世界的理想，中国发生了举世闻名的“长征”，取得了中国革命的胜利。半个世纪过去了，在全球一体化，资本作为惟一的价值标准，对资本的占有并不能满足存在的危机，全球的物质化与消费时代的到来并不能解决人类自古以来心性的平和，在这种情形下重新提出中国革命最初的构想，在当今有特殊的寓意。

“Red Army-Long March in Europe”

A new meaning was given to “Long March” in the contemporary world.

The presence of Chinese red army in Europe symbolized the revolutionary Chinese spirit in western contemporary art world.

This performance took place in Kassel, Germany, as an unofficial event during the opening of the “Documental XI” in 2002.

This project was initiated by Cai Qing and his colleagues. Before the performance, they invited art critic Leng Lin, scholar Zhang Mingyue and several German friends to talk about the “Long March” in Berlin.

Dialogue-

Leng Lin: First of all, let’s talk about the purpose of this performance.

Zhang Qikai: We want to refresh people’s memory through this activity. The “Long March” spirit will be carried forward.

Cai Qing: We are placing the familiar symbol (Long March) into a strange new environment. This kind of contrast stimulates viewers’ imagination. In this way, “Long March” acquires a new meaning.

Zhang Mingyue: Why you chose Long March? There are many famous symbols in China, for instance Terra cotta Army?

Cai Qing: Terra Cotta Army is still and quite, Long March is mobile, revolutionary and can be extended to the modern world. Most importantly, is its spiritual value.

Shan Zeng: Red star over Europe. Frequently, westerner learned about communism in China and the Chinese communist revolution form a book “Red star over China” written by Edgar snow in 1938. He described the realization of communism in China from his own experience. This performance in Karl Marx’s home country has a special meaning.

Jiao Ping: We just want to experience what we have never experienced and do what we are not able to do along.

Torsten Kastner: How many people will be joining you?

Shan Zeng: The group initially consists of 4 Chinese and Taiwanese artists from Berlin. Three more Chinese art students and 4 artists from different countries (Columbia, Cuba Sudan and Germany) will join us in Kassel.

Zhang Qikai: We welcome anyone to join us along the way, to experience “fire of the star, may set the prairie afire”.

Cai Qing: We have only 12 sets of red army uniforms. If there are more people who wish to join us, we will share a hat or shirt with them. Gradually, red army will be diluted into the mass. The element of Long March will be everywhere.

Wolfgang Knapp: Do you have further interpretation about “Long March”?

Leng Lin: In the 30’s, Long March initiated the establishment of a new China. Half century has past, in the global integration; the capitalism is the only value. However Capital cannot solve the existing crisis. The arrival of global materialization and the consumer epoch cannot satisfy the spiritual emptiness of human being. Under this circumstance, the initial Chinese revolutionary concept has a special meaning in the contemporary world.
