学校成立于1871年，是斯堪的那维亚国家中最大的艺术类院校，也是芬兰最具国际化特色的大学之一。该大学是北欧斯堪的那维亚国家中规模最大和教学质量最好的艺术设计类院校之一。同时，大学还拥有许多国外的教授，讲师及研究人员。他们中的大多数在MEDIA实验室及设计系工作，尤其是工业设计和设计管理专业。

 

随着国际合作的不断增多，赫尔辛基艺术与设计大学已与130名国外院校签署了合作协议，近年来同东南亚，中国，日本及韩国院校的合作也在不断加强。大学下设5个学院17个专业，包括：设计、电影、视觉传达。每年都有2600个学生申请入学。

 

大学位于芬兰首都赫尔辛基市，地处波罗的海芬兰湾北部的一个半岛上，群岛环抱，景色秀丽，素有“波罗的海的女儿”之称。 赫尔辛基市始建于1550年，1812年成为芬兰首都。市辖面积686平方公里，陆地面积185平方公里，岛屿315个。城市人口51万。
